Heroes of Colour - Virtual Gallery

Earlier this year, Year 8 completed a collage inspired the work of African-American textile artist Bisa Butler. Butler creates large-scale, colourful, quilted portraits celebrating Black life using kente fabrics and other African wax prints. The first task students were given was to create patterned paper using resources they had at home. As this was during the school closure, students had to be very resourceful with the materials they were able to gather to create their patterns, using everything from painting with toothbrushes and potato printing to marbling using shaving foam and food colouring! Then they used their patterned paper to create a portrait of an inspirational person of colour of their choice. We were blown away by the creativity and ingenuity of our students and seeing the images being uploaded onto our google classroom pages during lockdown was a joy! We had portraits submitted of everyone from Barack Obama, Oprah, Beyoncé to Mae Jemison, who was the first African-American astronaut.

Mrs Wills has created this beautiful virtual gallery featuring some of the best submissions we received so please take time to have a look. Well done Year 8!
